SEATTLE – The Seattle Foundation (TSF) and Crosscut have embarked on an exciting collaboration to incorporate more diverse sources of information into news reporting, and to explore ways to get people more engaged and involved in helping solve community problems.
This partnership, with funding from the
John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, is an important national pilot project and a leading example of nonprofit, online, nonpartisan journalism. Starting this week, some news stories on the
Crosscut website will include a box offering links to more information on both TSF's and Crosscut's websites. This "Get Involved" box will adjoin stories where there is a connection between a topic and the work of the Foundation and nonprofits in the community. This project is working to create "complete readers" who move from mild curiosity to actively contributing to community problem solving.
In addition, The Seattle Foundation's website now has a live page of Crosscut's local coverage on its website, as a way to give our visitors access to a wider selection of local media stories relevant to nonprofits, the Foundation and philanthropy. This page is operated and controlled by Crosscut editors, who select local stories with a view toward what the editors believe will be of most interest to readers using TSF's website, with the aim of giving readers a quick exposure to the best of local coverage—ranging from major news outlets to blogs.
The Crosscut/Seattle Foundation partnership also is exploring ways to incorporate far more diverse sources of information into news reporting to provide a true public forum of thoughtful and varied commentary.
