Our Mission, History and Growth

The Seattle Foundation's mission is to create a healthy community through engaged philanthropy, community knowledge and leadership. We encourage personal philanthropy and connect individuals with the issues they care about--providing them with support and inspiration to give effectively and improve our community.

Founded in 1946, The Seattle Foundation is the oldest and largest community foundation in Washington state. Over the years, its assets have grown to exceed $585 million. From basic needs and environment to education and arts and culture, The Seattle Foundation makes grants to the nonprofit organizations that are working every day to make a healthy community in the greater Seattle area, now and for the future.

As we look back on our remarkable history we are moved by the inspiring vision and generosity of countless donors. Looking ahead we are proud to support your giving and help you shape our community and the world for many generations to come.

History
With the end of World War II and the beginning of an economic upswing, Dr. Richard Fuller, a Seattle business leader and founder of the Seattle Art Museum, foresaw a need to create a permanent endowment that would be used to improve the welfare of Seattle area residents. Dr. Fuller and seven other philanthropists created The Seattle Foundation in 1946 with an initial endowment of $289,000. The Fuller funds now support King County nonprofit organizations with over $250,000 in grants annually. The Fuller funds represent just a few of the over 1,100 funds established at The Seattle Foundation.
