Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Washington Programs
Strong, caring relationships are at the heart of each match between an adult volunteer (“Big”) and an at-risk child (“Little”). We know that Littles need more than an after school program, tutoring, or homework assistance. Littles desire a one-to-one caring relationship with an adult they can respect and admire; an adult who will be an enduring role model in their lives.
“Bigs” and “Littles” represent all aspects of our community. What Littles have in common is a wish for an adult in their life beyond their parent or guardian. Littles may be foster children, have an incarcerated parent, or identified as somehow vulnerable. They need a grownup who will give them opportunities to grow, learn, have fun, and explore the world together. Bigs represent the best in each of us. They are those special people who, just like that “someone’ in our childhood, create adventures and wonderful memories for Littles.
Big Brothers Big Sisters isn’t just a match-making organization. National research shows that Littles are more likely to show positive behaviors in school and at home than children not matched with a Big. They are more likely to avoid drugs and alcohol, and have improved school attendance. Our matches are effective because professional staff ensure that the relationships are safe and rewarding for everyone involved.
We have Littles waiting. A Big makes a world of difference in a child’s life---and Bigs get to experience the joy of childhood all over again. All is takes is about an hour a week and a willingness to explore, enjoy and engage in a whole new world.
We don’t want a building, or a van, or a computer lab. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Washington wants a community committed to giving all our children the opportunity to fulfill their highest positive potential. We know you want that, too.
We have three mentoring programs that allow us to serve the kids in our community: Community-based, School-based, and Mentoring Youth in Fostercare. For more information please visit our website: www.swwabigs.org.
Recent Successes and Current Challenges
Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies across the nation are experiencing a shortage of male mentors! Some boys wait as long as two years before being matched.
