The CAIR Project

Description

The CAIR (Community Abortion Information & Resource) Project is a 501(c)(3) non-profit social service organization dedicated to removing barriers to abortion access. The CAIR Project began as a community effort in August 1998 in response to an unmet need for breaking down financial barriers to abortion. CAIR operates a toll-free hotline staffed by well-trained and compassionate volunteer advocates who provide accurate, non-biased information and referral in addition to financial assistance in the form of grants for abortion services. CAIR is a regional organization that provides abortion funding and hotline support to women in Washington, Alaska, Idaho and Oregon.

The CAIR Project Programs

The CAIR Project operates a toll-free hotline run entirely by highly trained volunteers who provide women with the information they need to navigate legal and geographical restrictions and benefits such as Medicaid eligibility and provider locations. We provide grants to low-income women so that they can access the abortion care they need. CAIR works with abortion providers in our region to ensure that women know about the resources they can access and are empowered to advocate for themselves.

The CAIR Project regularly hosts events designed to build awareness about reproductive health issues and partners with organizations such as NARAL, Planned Parenthood and Cedar River Clinic to educate and recruit volunteers and contributors.

Recent Successes and Current Challenges

This year marks the 14th anniversary of our hotline serving women in the Pacific Northwest and removing financial barriers to abortion access. We have been recognized by the National Network of Abortion Funds for creating a regional colaborative with another organization so that we can better serve women seeking abortion funding. Each year we have raised more money, served more women, and increased our average grant amount. This is due entirely to the passion and commitment of our volunteer hotline advocates, generous supporters and board.

Demand for our services continues to skyrocket. Reproductive choice only exists when women are able to safely and legally access abortion. With individuals feeling the effects of the recession and increasingly restrictive anti-choice legislation passing around the country, this legal health care service is denied to many. As a completely volunteer run organization, around 90% of our budget goes directly to grants to low-income women unable to otherwise afford a legal abortion. We rely on the support of donors to help us get these women the financial assistance they need. Additionally, we are always in search of volunteers for our hotline, especially volunteers bilingual in Spanish and English. Please contact us if you are interested in finding out more!
