Camlann Medieval Association

Description

Camlann's living history museum project is one of a handful worldwide in which interpreters take on the role of a historical person so that visitors may experience firsthand the daily village life, meals, arts and culture of the world of our ancestors.  Programs are designed to serve all age populations and include professional artistic performances, visitor participation, and study & research programs.

Mission Statement
To offer the public powerful personal experiences of history, including multiple learning and performing arts opportunities, built upon thorough research of rural communities in 14th century England, to provide a deeper understanding of the relationship between historical events and western society today.

Field Trips & Classes are offered year-round to public school students, homeschool groups, retired communities and special interest groups.  These include a 2-hour site visit and discussions of medieval culture;  Workshops offer 4-hour sessions on selected historical topics.

Recent Successes and Current Challenges

Visitors may now visit our new blacksmith's forge, featuring a unique hand-forged medieval-type anvil, where iron work demonstrations are presented during village hours. This structure was built using medieval tools and timber-frame / wattle and daub techniques, and is now a popular attraction for visitors of all ages. A new shoe making demonstration is now featured at our village.

Funding is needed now to continue construction of new dwelling structures in the village, a new gatehouse / interpretive center and a woodworking shop.  2013 funds will also help fund a festival presentation of martial combat based on manuals written in the 14th and 15th century.
