Catholic Newman Center - University of Washington

Description

We serve approximately 700 students a week, along with faculty, staff, and university community.  We offer a wide range of programs and services designed to engage the university, enrich student education, and promote an active faith in Christ.  We do this by offering nearly 10 annual life changing retreats, community service projects, education classes, Bible study, sports teams, socials, campus outreach, lectures, leadership development, prayer groups, special liturgies, weekly Masses, all the Sacraments, and more.

Mission Statement
The Catholic Newman Center serves the students, faculty, staff, and community of the University of Washington.  We are called by Christ to build a faith community.  Empowered by the Holy Spirit to be truly compassionate disciples, we are committed to the truth of the Gospel and promotion of social justice.  Rooted in the Dominican traditions of prayer, study, and community, we complement the secular education at the University, giving our members a wholeness of knowledge, and preparing them to be the ethical and faithful future leaders of our Church and world.

Catholic Newman Center - University of Washington Programs

Our annual SEARCH retreat is an incredibly important aspect of the student experience.  Over the course of 3 days and two nights, students leave behind the stress and overwhelming demands of school to refocus and balance their lives in Christ.  The retreat is meant to inspire students to embrace their faith as adults, to question and seek answers to the things they've struggled with all their life, and to realize that their faith must be a part of everything they do moving forward.  The retreat is filled with surprises and powerful moments that reinforce the awesome power of God in one's life.  This retreat is consistently listed as the "defining moment" in the faith life of students.

Recent Successes and Current Challenges

Our organization has grown considerably over the past 10 years.  Though we serve approximately 700+ students a week, we know there are as many as 7,000 Catholic students on campus.  Every aspect of our programming, staff, and facility have been taxed to maximum capacity, and we need as much help as possible to increase our funding of student activities, program investments, and capital improvements.

This is the only Catholic ministry dedicated to the University of Washington, and the students desperately need this spiritual oasis as their home-away-from-home.
