Children's Therapy Center

Description

We strive to give EVERY child with special needs the ability to “achieve their highest possible degree of functioning” and to do the things taken for granted by most children – the ability to walk, talk, eat, laugh, play, make friends, and to be ready for school and whatever lies beyond.

Children are referred to us with a variety of developmental disabilities and delays including cerebral palsy and other neurological disorders, torticollis, speech and language disorders, brachial plexus injuries, spina bifida, Down syndrome, feeding disorders, sensory processing difficulties, and Autism Spectrum Disorders. Often, premature babies are often referred to us immediately after being released from the Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) of several local hospitals.

Children's Therapy Center Programs

We provide physical, occupational, and speech language therapy services for children with developmental delays and disabilities.  In addition, children with delays in motor function may receive specialized physical therapy services including hippo (horse) therapy and aquatic (pool) therapy to increase their strength, stamina, coordination, and flexibility. Children with cognitive and/or communication delays are taught to utilize supportive methods of communication including sign language, communication devices, and picture exchange systems while their verbal skills are developing.  We offer social skills and individualized fitness center programs to help children develop the skills to participate in peer activities.

Additionally, we provide a wide range of very flexible orthotic bracing systems and compression garments for feet, ankles, legs, trunk, and arms.  Our othotic services assist active motor control, body alignment and stability, as well as sensory body awareness.  We are known throughout the Pacific Northwest as the highest quality provider of customized orthotics for children with special needs.

Recent Successes and Current Challenges

While we have quantitative data that our services are achieving the desired outcome, even more meaningful to us is the qualitative reports from families.  Below are some responses to our parent surveys:
  • “My child was barely talking when we started and not even a year into the program she’s repeating words and speaking by herself.”
  • “My child’s speech and understanding, as well as communication skills (ie. Pointing, signing), have improved markedly.  He is now able to climb steps alone, has better control of his body movements in space, is more willing to experience sensations he previously avoided.”
  • “CTC is meeting his needs.  He has been in therapy since birth and has surpassed all the things doctors have ever thought he would do.”
  • “One of my sons had a hard time making friends because of his speech.  Speech therapy has him more confident in himself and now he talks with kids and tries to make friends.”

Community Need
Due to the rise in developmental delays and disabilities, we have seen an unprecedented demand for our services.  In regards to children with special needs, all indicators are saying the problem is only going to get bigger.  Due to the nature of our services, we can’t add staff until we have more space.  Without additional space, we are unable to hire additional therapists and provide more therapy services ~ which would mean the waiting list will continue to grow.

In conjunction with our other Dynamic Partners, we have purchased an 18,630 square foot building located at 127 SW 156th Street in Burien, Washington and are renovating this office building into a vibrant new multi-service center serving children with special needs.  WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT TO HELP BUILD THIS NEW CENTER!

Dynamic Family Partners – Dynamic Family Services, SKIP, Children’s Therapy Center

Dynamic Family Partners is a unique consortium of organizations serving children with special needs including direct service providers South King Intervention Program and Children’s Therapy Center. Dynamic Orthotic Systems and SPIO Compression Garments are social ventures also under the umbrella of the organization. Dynamic Family Services provides administrative and back office support for each organization including leadership, fundraising, data collection and record keeping, accounting, and human resources.

Use of Best Practices
Children’s Therapy Center (CTC) provides occupational, physical, speech, feeding, aquatic, and hippo (horse) therapy for children ages 0-18. Services are provided at CTC’s facility by highly qualified staff, and family members are incorporated into the treatment along with the child. Daily living skills are addressed as well as parent education and support. South King Intervention Program is based on the central tenant that children are always learning and that they learn best in their natural environment. Staff provide therapy and coaching for families in the home or daycare, creating an Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) including immediate needs and future goals for the child.

Sustainability
Dynamic Family Partners was established to create efficiencies across member organizations through shared administrative functions. They estimate that approximately $200,000 is saved annually by each organization. For example, the organizations are able to serve more families through in house programming thanks to shared data and scheduling systems. Social enterprises SPIO and Dynamic Orthotics are an important element of this, and increase the amount of revenue Dynamic generates as a service provider. Dynamic Family Services is actively seeking out other social enterprise opportunities to continue to expand revenue generating services.

Leadership
There is currently a 300 person waitlist for services at Dynamic Family Partner programs. This is in part due to lack of therapy space, but also due to lack of staff and time. The Leadership of Dynamic Family Service is actively working to remedy both. The goal is to increase capacity by ramping up staff recruitment efforts and developing new treatment space in Kent and Burien to meet the rapidly growing need for services in South King County.
