Community For Youth

Description

Community for Youth transforms high school students who are struggling - with school, with family, with their direction in life - into young adults who have confidence, determination and self-awareness. Supported by a community of adult mentors who are relentlessly committed to their success, teenagers learn to make thoughtful choices, fulfill their commitments, acknowledge their mistakes and account for their actions. By taking control of their lives, students realize they can achieve more than they ever dreamed possible.

Mission Statement
Community for Youth inspires and supports youth to identify and achieve their goals through mentoring, learning experiences, and participation in a powerful community.

Community For Youth Programs

Mentors and students meet weekly throughout the school year. The program consists of a rotation of program activities:
  • Workshops
  • Large group activities
  • Match time with mentor/student
  • Training and coaching for mentors
Workshops are designed to reinforce and expand the learning that began at the launch courses.  Each workshop includes an opportunity for students and mentors to acknowledge each other and take responsibility for their actions and behaviors.

Recent Successes and Current Challenges

Our current cohort of students had an overall average GPA increase from 2.4 to 2.8 between last school year and this year. Of that same-student pool, 75% improved their math grades and 71% increased the language arts grades during the same period; it is safe to say that our program works!  Community for Youth currently needs to expand the number of students who it serves. The need is tremendous and while CfY may not be able to serve every student it has a special and unique program in its arsenal and needs to be more widely deployed!
