Community Homes Inc.

Description

For the first time in history, people with disabilities are outliving their parents.  In King County alone, there are 2,000 adults with disabilities in need of housing.  Their housing needs are complicated by very low income and the necessity of support services.  Community Homes meets this need with supportive and affordable housing. Our live-in Care Providers deliver personal care services and teach independent living skills.  We offer these services with very little out-of-pocket expense to our residents.

Community Homes currently provides safe, affordable, supported housing for 30 adults in King County.  We are in the process of opening another home for an additional 5 adults.

Mission Statement
Community Homes creates rich full lives for adults with developmental disabilities by providing quality, long term Adult Family Homes.

We select, train and support full-time Care Providers to create the environment for residents to grow and experience independence in the community.

Programs

Community Homes Inc. Programs

Community Homes is committed to creating an environment of lifelong learning and self-determination for our residents to grow and experience meaningful participation in the community. Care providers teach and assist with day-to-day living skills, help maintain employment, arrange transportation and encourage social and recreational activities.
Community Homes’ proven ability to implement this philosophy over the past 17 years is integral to the success of our homes.

Our programs are unique in our focus to keep our residents actively involved in their communities – through their jobs, social events, and recreational programs.  We experience a very high rate of satisfaction among our residents and their parents/guardians as evidenced by very low turnover (less than 2%) and very high ratings on annual evaluations.

Recent Successes and Current Challenges

Community Homes, Inc. has been successful in providing close-knit, supportive, and comfortable adult family homes for adults with developmental disabilities on the eastside. Each home is run by a care provider, but the heart of the home comes from the community created by the residents who live there.  We recently received public funding to open our seventh home.  This newest home will be operational in 2013.  Last year, with the help of the Seattle Foundation, we were able to remodel the kitchens in two of our homes, making it easier for our care givers to cook and serve dinner for their residents 365 days per year

Our annual operating budget is $400,000, or $13,000 per resident per year.  75% of our revenue comes from room and board.  Our annual contributed support is approximately $100,000. The annual budget includes $86,000 for food, $45,000 for utilities, and $50,000 for repairs and maintenance.

Evaluation

Community Homes provides affordable housing for low-income adults with special needs living in east King County.

Proven Success
Community Homes works to ensure live-in care providers are supported and have limited turnover by supplementing the resources they receive from Medicaid – for instance when Medicaid reduced payments by 4%, Community Homes reduced the rent that care providers had to pay. Care providers teach and assist with day-to-day living skills, help maintain employment, arrange transportation and encourage social activities and engagement with the broader community.

Community Homes seeks feedback through monthly meetings with care givers and annual parent evaluations regarding their services and supports.

Collaboration
The agency works with Division of Development Disabilities/DSHS case managers to ensure they meet the support needs of each of their residents. They participate in trainings offered by DDD to ensure best practices in their services. They also work with DDD quality assurance specialists to match their clients who are seeking housing when they have an opening. Community Homes and DDD are looking at ways to revise CH’s resident profile to accommodate a greater range of disabilities and expand the pool of potential residents.
