Seattle Area Support Groups & Community Center

Description

Dunshee House was founded as Seattle AIDS Support Group to serve members of the community impacted by HIV/AIDS at the height of the AIDS epidemic.  Today we serve a far larger part of the community, providing social and peer support groups to individuals faced with life challenging situations such as living with HIV, recovery/addiction, grief & loss, religious abuse, childhood sexual assault, spirituality, and much more.

Mission Statement
Dunshee House, a non-profit organization, builds community and cultivates powerful, healthy lives by providing emotional support and personal development services to those affected by HIV/AIDS, the Queer communities, and those who love them. Our work is done in a spirit of safety, trust, inclusiveness, and celebration of individual differences.

Seattle Area Support Groups & Community Center Programs

Dunshee House provides peer support to the LGBTQ community, particularly underserved and marginalized individuals living with life challenging circumstance.  To help achieve that objective we offer training around peer support education throughout the year to members of the community who are interested in facilitating a peer support group.  Scholarships are available for individuals who are unable to afford the $150 cost to attend.  Our organization also provides a safe and sober space for individuals to come together for social events and holiday meals.  We further support individuals through our voucher program; this program provides access to the arts in Seattle at no cost to members.

Recent Successes and Current Challenges

Dunshee House/SASG has recently had some great success stories.  There have been several new groups to join the calendar, offering greater service to the community, such as the LGBTQ Veterans Group, Grief & Loss Group, and most recently Brother’s of Prometheus (Gay & Bi men who have experienced religious wounding).  We have further rolled out new programs such as the Dunshee Voucher Program, providing free admission to various venues in the Seattle area, allowing access to the arts for individuals who may not have been able to afford the cost of attending.

The current needs of the organization are related to funding.  As psycho-social support is no longer funded, the organization receives very little funding in the form of grants.  Currently we receive a small portion of a grant from SAMHSA that is set to expire in September, 2011.

Evaluation

Dunshee House provides peer-based emotional support to individuals in the community who are confronting or coming to terms with life challenging situations or illness such as HIV/AIDS, addiction and recovery, grief and loss, childhood sexual assault, religious abuse, and discrimination.

Accessibility and Cultural Competency
Dunshee House has transitioned from an organization serving only members of the community impacted by HIV/AIDS to providing peer support to the LGBTQ community.

Scholarships are available for individuals interested in receiving “peer support education” training to facilitate a peer support group.

Dunshee’s new voucher program provides access to the arts (various venues) in Seattle at no cost to members.

The LGBTQ Veterans Group was started in 2011 to support Veterans issues related to their military service.
