Cedar River Clinics (Feminist Women's Health Center)

Description

Cedar River Clinics is a social justice organization that combines direct services (abortion, birth control, reproductive healthcare), with advocacy and activism (to preserve and ensure access) and community education (to demystify health information and empower health decisions.)

We make reproductive care accessible at community clinics in Renton and Tacoma. 75% of clients are under age 30; 60% are mothers, most have no insurance. Clients served(and staff working) in Renton reflect South King County’s diversity of cultures, races, ethnicities and languages. Of King County residents served in Renton, 20% were from Renton, 20% from Kent and 36% from Seattle. We underwrite certified medical interpreters whenever needed.

Mission Statement
To achieve reproductive freedom, we provide abortion care, birth control, and women’s health care, so that women may determine their destinies. Each woman must have decision making power over her reproduction, sexuality and body.

Programs

Cedar River Clinics (Feminist Women's Health Center) Programs

Abortion Care
We provide early and later abortions including a special fetal indications program.  We are the only provider of surgical abortions in South King and serve 2500 women annually.  About 65% of clients are low income and qualify for State Medicaid covered pregnancy care. Community health centers (HealthPoint, Planned Parenthood, SeaMar, Public Health) refer women for care they don’t provide themselves.

Birth Control/Well Woman Care
We serve 1500 annually for basic reproductive care. We are contracted with DSHS to provide Take Charge family planning to low income uninsured people. We strive to keep care affordable and make it empowering. In 2013, we are launching a Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Health Program.

Community Education
Education occurs with clients in the clinic during every appointment. Additionally our three websites offer useful information about birth control, women’s health, and abortion to the public. We published the one-of-a-kind Birth Control Comparison Chart and companion website (www.Birth-Control-Comparison.info) to help people better understand and compare their options.  In 2013, we are expanding our community education to include an on-line video series on reproductive health for adults and teens.  We are developing free community workshops in our clinics and a speakers bureau available to community organizations, youth groups, and schools to request education services.

Recent Successes and Current Challenges

Recent Success:  We were granted AAAHC accreditation for 2012-2014.  As the only AAAHC accredited abortion provider in Washington since 2001, our clinics meet the rigorous standards for quality set by the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Centers and are the Number One place where physicians around the Pacific Northwest refer women.

To strike down barriers to reproductive healthcare access, your contribution can help cover care when a gap exists between what a woman can pay and what her care costs, pay for medical interpreters for women with limited English proficiency, help a woman travel or stay overnight nearby while receiving care, or pay for medications and tests.

Evaluation

Cedar River Clinics provide reproductive health services to women in South King County.

Proven Success
As abortion has become more stigmatized in recent years, Cedar River Clinics have maintained their focus on high medical standards as they meet the unique health care needs of women who have decided abortion is their best option given their circumstances. The Clinics also make birth control and well woman care accessible. Accreditation by AAAHC, the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, demonstrates the Clinics meet rigorous national standards for quality care.

Cedar River Clinics is the only provider of surgical abortion in South King County and make care accessible to: teens, women in military families (on or off military bases, here and around the world), women with limited English proficiency, homeless women, and women dealing with pregnancy loss due to severe fetal anomalies who are referred by specialists.

Accessibility
In May 2011, Guttmacher Institute reported that “abortion rates declined among most groups of women between 2000 and 2008. However, one notable exception was poor women.” The struggle for community clinics is keeping fees low enough to be accessible at the same time medical supply and other costs continue to increase in an economy when nearly everyone has fewer funds to pay for health care, less access to insurance coverage, and fewer dollars to contribute as donations.
