Friends of Sealth - IB Scholarship Fund

Chief Sealth is an accredited International Baccalaureate School. With a goal of 70 percent program participation, students can challenge themselves to earn a full IB Diploma, or take several IB Certificate courses. IB courses are open to all students who have  successfully met the pre-requisites.

Although the state pays 90% of test fees for students who qualify for free and reduced lunch benefits, there are still up to 25% of families with IB students who find the testing fees to be a significant barrier to participation. Testing in six subjects for the full IB Diploma costs up to $775.

Access to books and materials for the IB Program can be a barrier for students. This year we are expanding our fundraising to include the purchase of these items to make sure every student has the opportunity to succeed.
Mission Statement
Begun in 2010, the International Baccalaureate Scholarship Fund is a community based effort to ensure every student at Chief Sealth High School has the opportunity to participate and complete this academic program. The IB Diploma Programme is a challenging two-year curriculum providing an integrated and proven approach to college prep.

This year we are expanding our support to include books and materials students need to be successful.

Friends of Sealth - IB Scholarship Fund Programs

As one of the most diverse high schools in Washington State, Chief Sealth strives to provide opportunity for every student. In the past three years the number of program participants has grown from 57 to 78. Chief Sealth High School has graduated 38 full diploma candidates and 161 IB certificate students while dramatically increasing the number of students prepared for college. A study done under the auspices of the State of Oregon shows those students who take the exams have a higher rate of college success, regardless of the scores they earn.

Although the state pays 90% of test fees for students who qualify for free and reduced lunch benefits, the testing fees can be a significant barrier to participation for up to 25% or 20 families. By participating in the Big Give, we are hoping to raise $10,000 of the $14,900 needed to make sure that the test fees are not a barrier to any student.

Access to much needed books and materials has emerged as another potential barrier to deserving students. This year we are expanding our fundraising efforts to include support for these much needed needed materials.
