Invest in Youth Programs
Invest in Youth serves second to fifth grade students who have been identified as academically at-risk, students without English spoken at home or students who lack consistent adult one-on-one attention. Our volunteer tutors work with nearly 100 students each year at no cost to the student or the school. Many of our current tutors have worked with the same student for three years fostering a lasting relationship that truly impacts the child’s future. Our current Elementary schools, (Thurgood Marshall, Roxhill, Daniel Bagley and Beacon Hill International), were selected based on low test scores, low income levels and potentially troublesome student home lives. In addition to weekly tutoring, volunteer tutors and students prepare for a year end field trip which opens up new knowledge and experiences. Participating fifth graders may apply for summer camp where self-confidence, team-building and environmental awareness adds to their potential for good citizenship. These additional incentives to students both reward the students for their accomplishments and perseverance, and expand their education beyond the classroom.
Community support would directly impact our ability to train, sustain and manage an increased number of volunteer tutors to work one on one with struggling learners.
Recent Successes and Current Challenges
Unlike many other tutoring programs available in the Seattle Public Schools, Invest in Youth matches each volunteer tutor with a single student for the entire school year. This arrangement fosters a truly meaningful tutor-student relationship as the pair spends time identifying the student’s strengths and weaknesses and tracking progress from week to week. It is an extremely rewarding experience for both students and their tutors.
Your donation will support Invest in Youth's capacity to provide high quality support and assistance to struggling learners. No matter the size, every contribution makes a positive impact!
