MAP Theatre

Description

MAP continuously works towards expanding our audience base beyond that of the typical theatre patrons and we want to offer experiences that overlap with other, non-theatrical mediums in the arts community; combining theatre with visual art, music, dance, etc… to build our relationships with other local artists to create a new kind of performance experience.

Mission Statement
MAP's goal is – above all – always to laugh and have fun, meet new friends, greet old friends, and continuously push the boundaries of what traditional “theatre” is and bust the stereotypes of who “theatre” is for. It’s for the people, my friends. No fooling.

MAP Theatre Programs

We currently produce and host a trivia event every 6-8 weeks. It helps build our audience base when we are not in production, and attracts people who are not necessarily the average theatre patron. It gets them excited about us and hopefully converts some non-theatre-goers into regular attendees.

To help cultivate our decision making process regarding what shows we want to produce, we host regular readings of work by local Seattle-area playwrights. These readings help the authors "test drive" their work, while getting feedback from us and the actors involved. We always hope to find our next mainstage production from these readings, which we will then workshop until the piece is ready for performance.  We currently strive to present one mainstage show per calendar year.

Recent Successes and Current Challenges

MAP's inaugural production of 3 Screams premiere this past winter at Theatre Off Jackson was an important success for us.  Due to thorough and detailed preparation, we had very few surprises that we weren’t able to deal with.  The team we assembled (cast, crew, and designers) are all experienced professionals, and care about a quality final product.  In terms of quality, it met and exceeded our dream goal.  It was critically-acclaimed, receiving 8 out of 8 positive reviews.  The general audience feedback was also positive and encouraging. The entire process from workshop to production took over a year of careful planning, during which we worked very closely with the playwright and entire team to fine-tune our collaborative vision.

An ever-present need we have is a way to consistently compensate our artists and crew. We are always looking for creative ways to increase our stipends -- through grants, a percentage of our box office net profits, or some combination of those and any other available resources.
