Manifold Motion

Description

Manifold Motion interweaves dance, interactive technology, visual art, and music to create original, experimental, evening-length productions. We focus on a collaborative, interdisciplinary process, bringing diverse artists together to jointly create work that stretches and challenges each creatively. To date, Manifold Motion has collaborated with over 45 dancers, musicians, writers, technologists and visual artists.

Mission Statement
Manifold Motion is an interdisciplinary performance group. Our mission is to cross barriers between artistic disciplines, encourage collaboration between artists, and provide opportunities for the public to experience new modes of expression.

Manifold Motion Programs

Creating Original Productions
We create original evening length productions that blur the lines between artistic disciplines, entertain, and transport viewers to new worlds. These productions are large scale, finely crafted experiences, professionally produced and performed.

Supporting the Work of Independent Artists
We produce a showcase series, Miscellanea, where past collaborators are invited to show their own work. This is an opportunity for artists to have their work produced and expand their audience base. Meanwhile, Manifold Motion fans are presented with a variety of creative works, connecting them to artists throughout the community.

Affordable Tickets
To bring our shows to as many people as possible, we offer all tickets on a sliding-scale basis.

Providing Opportunities
We offer special workshops and classes for the public to explore further the arts expertise of our collaborators. These are often an opportunity to become a part of the process of creating a larger production, meet the artists, and learn about how we work.

Recent Successes and Current Challenges

Past Work
A recent success is Manifold Motion's production, Under. This show ran for 27 shows in November 2010, most of which sold out. Under was our most immersive production to date, in which we took the stage and brought it all around the audience. Visitors entered and explored a secret world created by a team of 16 artists that spanned the course of three rooms. The environment included sculptures that reacted to the presence of people, breathing ceilings, a dripping wall of goo, and a mulch covered floor.

As the audience was led through the world they encountered performances by the many denizens of this created world. Rounding out the experience were fantastical costumes that not only delighted the eye but affected and shaped the performances, even to the extent of rooting a dancer's hands to the floor.

Upcoming Needs
One of Manifold Motion’s current needs is funding to produce the third installment of our Miscellanea showcase series in Autumn 2012. Through this series we produce the individual work of up to 12 past collaborators at a time. We provide all production and marketing, and a stipend to each artist. The major costs are stipends and theater rental. Miscellanea is a fantastic opportunity for artists and audiences alike to share and discover exciting new work.
