The Market Street Singers

Description

The Market Street Singers is a non-audition, volunteer community choir based in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle. In the ten years since our founding we have grown into a diverse group of 85 singers (and growing). We are proud of our inclusive, service-oriented vision. We seek to be an agent of change and community building through musical excellence and public outreach.Musical styles range from classical to contemporary and everything in between.

We present three free concerts each year and sing at outreach and benefit events.

Mission Statement
The Market Street Singers is a choral ensemble for Ballard that builds connections within diverse communities. Celebrating the joy of choral music among singers and listeners, we aspire to cultivate neighborhood pride with choral arts that are truly community identified.

The Market Street Singers Programs

In May of 2012, "Turn the World Around - Music With a Message" was our spring concert with a diverse program covering themes such as social justice, equality, and world peace. The highlight was a work called "Ballad for Americans" featuring soloist Michael Delos.

"Holiday Joy to Go!" was our annual Holiday concert, performed for the first time publically at Ballard First Lutheran in December of 2011.  As has been our tradition, we also performed at a number of nursing homes including one of our favorites, The Hearthstone.

Recent Successes and Current Challenges

Christmas 2012 we performed at Echo Glen Children's Center in Snoqualmie for the juveniles that have been incarcerated there. The program was very well received and we have been invited back for the 2013 holiday season. We have been looking for an opportunity to perform at one of the prisons in the area.  The logistics of this have proved to be a challenge as it seems likely we would need to rent a bus for travel as well as to meet the prison's need for controlled access.  Additional funding for this would be a great help.
