The MIYFS Foundations supports and enhances the work of Mercer Island Youth and Family Services that provides, coordinates and advocates for affordable, high qulaity human services for the community of Mercer Island. The department provides a multigeneratlonal range of services designed specifically for the unique needs of Mercer Island. Services touch all members of the community and include mental health counselors in the schools, senior outreach and advocacy, affordable family counseling, arrested youth and early intervention programs, family assistance and a thriving thrift shop. Founded in 1973, MIYFS is a department of the City of Mercer Island and works in partnershipo with its police, fire and legal departments as well as coordinating extensively with Mercer Island's Public Schools.

Mission Statement
The Mercer Island Youth and Family Services Foundation was founded in 1989 to support and enhance the work of MIYFS through fundraising efforts. The board continues to grow in its capacity to raise funds to support its vision of a healthy community for all youth, adults and families that live on Mercer Island.

Family and Emergency Assistance
Struggling Mercer Island families receive help to meet their basic needs and get back on their feet.

Youth Development
Teens learn the importance and value of giving back through VOICE and SVP volunteer opportunities.

Mental Health Counseling
Students, individuals and families get affordable, high quality support.

Drug and Alcohol Prevention
In-school counselors and community coalitions help our kids make good choices.

Diversion and Early Intervention
Arrested youth are refocused on positive learning experiences while being held accountable for illegal behavior.

Senior Outreach and Advocacy
Seniors, caretakers and family members benefit from seasoned geriatric professionals and develop better plans of care.

Mercer Island Thrift Shop
Business goals are realized through giving, volunteering, work-skill development and sustainability.

Recent Successes and Current Challenges

Did you know?
Use of the MIYFS Food Pantry has more than doubled over the last three years resulting in over 1,000 visitis by Islanders annually.

MIYFS school-based counselors provided direct service to 60% of all students in the district.

294 Island youth volunteered over 10,000 hours to 55 regional non-profit organizations through the MIYFS VOICE and SVP Programs.

Over 300 seniors and their family members received direct services through MIYFS last year for the first time.

Over 70 backpacks full of school supplies were distributed to Island students in need this year.

While only 3% of MIYFS students report abusing over the counter drugs, 49% believe most students in their school do so.
