Music4Life

Description

Research show that having access to instrumental music helps all students do better in science, math, history, languages and other scholastic disciplines.  Roughly 40 percent of public school students are from low income families.  The single greatest barrier to music education for a low income child is acquiring a musical instrument.  Starting with fourth and fifth graders, Music4Life acquires musical instruments from adults who no longer use them and by buying new student-level (beginner) instruments at bulk-price rates.   We provide them free of charge to the public schools' band and orchestra directors.

Mission Statement
Music4Life acquires musical instruments for low income students in the Seattle Public Schools and Highline Public Schools to help expand music education for everyone.

Music4Life Programs

Music4Life works with school-based band and orchestra directors who determine their students' needs and musical interests.  Once the directors tell us the musical instruments their students need, Music4Life goes out and finds them.

Music4Life understands that musical instruments need to be repaired and maintained.  We have an ongoing program with local repair shops to repair musical instruments when they need it, as well as at the end of the school year.

Some unusual instruments are difficult to acquire by public appeals.  Through cooperative arrangements we have with local musical instrument retailers and manufacturers, we can buy new beginner instruments at bulk-rate prices.

Recent Successes and Current Challenges

At the request of Highline Public Schools, Music4Life recently purchased five new violins and five new violas for Pacific Middle School.  They have been delivered to the orchestra director there and are being used by students now.

During the start-up phase of Music4Life, we have delivered more than 400 musical instruments to school band and orchestra directors free of charge.  But this just begins our task.  Ultimately, Music4Life aims to provide a musical instrument to any child (up through juniors in high school) from a low income family who wants one.  So far, we're only scratching the surface.
