NARAL Pro-Choice Washington Foundation Programs
Crisis Pregnancy Center Advocacy
NARAL Pro-Choice Washington Foundation is in its fourth year of Crisis Pregnancy Center advocacy. There are currently 46 operating Crisis Pregnancy Centers (CPCs) in Washington, otherwise known as fake clinics. CPCs are not licensed medical facilities and use deceptive tactics to influence women’s pregnancy decision. Through grassroots organizing, NARAL is expanding our statewide community education and awareness campaign about the anti-choice mission of fake clinics. This project will highlight the stories of real women who have been intentionally misinformed about their reproductive health care options at local CPCs.
Students for Choice - Campus Organizers
We empower college students to be pro-choice organizers in their college communities. Each year NARAL Pro-Choice Washington Foundation holds an all day summit for high school and college students called the Student Leadership Summit. Students attend workshops where they engage with community leaders and learn about the history of choice and the fundamentals of grassroots activism. We currently have four active campus groups.
Hospital Consolidations
We are working to ensure that all Washingtonians have access to the health care they need. With the changing health care landscape and the rising costs of providing services, many hospitals are considering consolidating with larger hospitals. In Washington State there are currently eight secular hospitals considering consolidation with Catholic hospitals, leaving the health care provided vulnerable to religious doctrine. We are educating and organizing the communities who will be affected by these mergers to prevent any loss of reproductive health services.
Recent Successes and Current Challenges
Plan B Statewide Pharmacy Survey
- Completed a survey of pharmacies across Washington State and created a map that provides information about the ease with which someone can purchase emergency contraception (commonly known as the "Morning After Pill" or Plan B) in their local area. Access the map here.
- Changing FDA rules make this topic one that NARAL will continue to monitor.
Crisis Pregnancy Center Narrative Project
- Identified and interviewed women who had visited Crisis Pregnancy Centers, as well as former CPC volunteers. We will be launching a public awareness campaign highlighting these women’s stories in the summer of 2013.
