Northwest Art Center

Description

The Northwest Art Center is the only nonprofit arts education dedicated to serving the rural communities in the Snoqualmie Valley area. Founded in 2009, NWAC provides quality art education programs for ages 3 through adult in classes and workshops to approximately 260 students each year. NWAC supports local professional artists by providing a space for them to work, teach, and engage with one another. NWAC also works to promote art appreciation and stewardship by engaging the community in art and creating outreach events that have the arts at their core. An additional 1000 community members are engaged in art programs in our schools, community events, and public gatherings through NWAC's outreach efforts.

Northwest Art Center Programs

Education:  The Northwest Art Center offers a variety of art education classes and workshops in a supportive, creative environment designed to foster new forms of self-expression. NWAC also provides an art education program for area home school students who would not otherwise have access to art education.

Mentorship:  Through NWAC's mentorship program, students who wish to pursue a professional career in art are paired with a mentor to help develop a portfolio and begin the process of college search.

Outreach:  NWAC also works to engage the community in art, promote arts stewardship, and provide a space for local artists to connect and collaborate.

Recent Successes and Current Challenges

As one of the Northwest Art Center's strategic goals, we wanted to strengthen the relationship between the adult artists in our community and the local arts organizations. We began convening a regular meeting of area arts stakeholders and it has been an overwhelming success. The result is the formation of the Snoqualmie Valley Arts & Culture Coalition and we have focused our efforts on creating and preserving arts and cultural space in our community--something that began over a decade ago but never came to fruition.

One of the greatest challenges NWAC faces is providing services in a rural community. Tuition is the primary form of support for the organization yet in one of the towns that we serve, 1 in 4 families lives in poverty. NWAC would like to find a way to reduce tuition and increase the opportunities for rural families to engage in art.
