Northwest Girlchoir

Description

Now in its 40th year, Northwest Girlchoir is the oldest girls’ choir in the Northwest. We provide outstanding music education in a nurturing environment where girls can learn, grow, and be themselves. Over the past four decades thousands of girls and young women have become part of our community and experience the joy of choral music, the pride of performances and tours, and the combined sense of independence and belonging. With 6 choirs and 240 choristers ages 6-18, we perform frequently throughout the year and collaborate with other arts organizations and community partners.

Mission Statement

Northwest Girlchoir Programs

Northwest Girlchoir reaches local, national, and international audiences each year through ticketed main-stage concerts, free outreach performances, and tours around the US and abroad.  In addition to preparing choristers for performance, our choir program teaches musicianship, teamwork, vocal technique, and leadership skills. The experience of rehearsing, performing, and touring together creates a supportive community for girls. In a way that school cannot, Northwest Girlchoir creates a sense of belonging and self-confidence for girls that inspires them to achieve in music and throughout life.

Recent Successes and Current Challenges

Northwest Girlchoir is celebrating its 40th anniversary with an ambitious year of concerts, commissions, and events, including a featured performance at the Chorus America National Conference in Seattle in June 2013. In March 2013 we host renowned guest composer and conductor Nick Page for a series of concerts, events, and a sing-along workshop at a local elementary school. Our collaborations this year include Seattle Art Museum, Women’s Funding Alliance, and Opus 7 Vocal Ensemble. In June 2013 we welcome back 40 years of alumnae to perform onstage at Meany Hall with our combined choirs. To finish out the year, our Vivace choristers will perform in Los Angeles and our Amore choristers tour to France and England.

This season has also brought exciting transitions, including a new executive director and a new office/rehearsal location starting in March 2013.

As we look ahead to next year and beyond, we seek to expand our reach to the community while developing efficiencies in our operations.

Specific goals include:
  • Expand our scholarship fund so we can better recruit and retain choristers regardless of socio-economic background.
  • Increase PR and marketing efforts to build awareness of Northwest Girlchoir’s programs both for young singers and the community.
  • Modestly increase administrative staffing to support community engagement and fundraising.
  • Implement a new CRM database to provide better service and communication for donors and participants, and greater efficiency for staff.
