Path with Art

Description

Path with Art broadens community engagement in the arts through multi-faceted arts programming. Through collaboration with social services organizations, local artists and arts and culture organizations, PwA breaks down the traditional barriers that exist in access to arts and culture opportunities. PwA targets adults who are seeking to rebuild their lives after experiencing homelessness, addiction or mental health challenges. Students have the opportunity to share their voice while also being heard, witnessed and acknowledged by others.

Mission Statement
Path with Art provides men and women the opportunity to engage in the creative process as a unique means to improve and rebuild their lives.

Path with Art Programs

Classes provide the first opportunity for connecting art with our students. Led by teaching artists from the region we offer classes in a variety of mediums. The site-based classes go where the students are. Classroom contracts are designed to promote a healthy learning environment, provide accountability and foster a sense of community.

Access Art
Collaborating with museums, galleries, theaters and other cultural institutions, Access Art facilitates opportunities for program participants to take part in first-rate performances, exhibits and lectures. These activities expose Path with Art students to the creative pulse of Seattle, provide access to local arts and cultural experiences, and foster a sense of inclusion in the greater community.

Access Art also benefits local cultural institutions by connecting them to the individuals served by Path with Art, integrating and broadening audience bases while advancing organizational missions of serving diverse and disadvantaged populations.

Exhibits
Students who have completed a Path with Art class are invited and encouraged to participate in a public exhibit or performance showcase honoring their work. Our exhibits provide each student with the opportunity to share their voice with the community, and reflect on the connection between their artwork and personal story in the form of a written artist statement. Exhibits are typically held in a community gallery space in Pioneer Square during First Thursday Art Walk. Performance showcases are held at Hugo House and the Henry Art Gallery.

Recent Successes and Current Challenges

In 2012, Path with Art completed a capacity building campaign to support program expansion over the next three years along with the infrastructure to sustain it. The direction for growth is and will be guided by our desire to maintain our “high touch” quality of services and extensive collaboration with our partner organizations as well as the findings from a comprehensive and tested outcomes evaluation that was launched last fall. (Results of this data will be published later in 2013!)

Path with Art continues to seek ongoing support for the vision of the Path with Art founders, which is: To provide unique opportunities for men and women to engage in the creative process through quality arts programming and access to the vibrant arts and culture scene in Seattle as a means for increasing self-esteem, building community and facilitating the personal growth necessary to prevent recidivism into homelessness.
