PEOPLE'S MEMORIAL

Description

People’s MemorialTM is the nation's oldest and largest nonprofit funeral consumer organization. The reality is that all of us will be funeral consumers some day, but most of us are unfamiliar with how to go about arranging the type of funeral we want at a price that is within our budget. Because most people do not shop around for funerals--costs can vary by as much as 800% depending upon which funeral home you choose. People's Memorial seeks to educate consumers about their rights and options as well as simplify the process for making funeral arrangements. We provide consumer education to the general public as well as simple, dignified, economical funeral arrangements to members at more than 25 funeral homes statewide.

People's Memorial serves primarily seniors and those facing terminal illness, however we seek to educate and prepare people for the inevitable at any stage of life.

PEOPLE'S MEMORIAL Programs

People’s MemorialTM envisions a future where all of us have information about and access to death care options that reflect our personal values and resources.

People's Memorial provides education to all consumers through our website, public speaking and educational brochures.  We are the go-to resource for consumers who have questions or problems with funeral arrangements.

For those who choose to join the organization, we simplify the process of funeral planning, by offering the opportunity to put their wishes in writing and be guaranteed economical prices and no sales pressure at more than 25 funeral homes statewide.

People's Memorial is also the voice for consumers through the governmental and legislative process.  We advocate for the needs of funeral consumers at both the state funeral and cemetery board as well at the state and local level.

Recent Successes and Current Challenges

People's Memorial recently initiated our "Got Your Ducks In a Row?" workshops to educate all consumers about the importance of planning for end-of-life.  These events are free to the public and include information about how to make sure your wishes are honored so that you may have the kind of death and funeral arrangements that you desire as well as make sure that your possessions are distributed according to your wishes.  We include a variety of forms and resources to make it easy to plan and be prepared.  The workshops have been hugely successful and been overbooked nearly every time.  We will conduct four "Ducks" Workshops in 2013--one in Spokane, two in Seattle, in addition to a much requested workshop addressing the unique needs of the LGBT community in Seattle.
