Progressive Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) provides professional, gentle care for the animals entrusted to us—from homeless pets, to sick, injured and orphaned wildlife. We also believe in creating systemic change through education and grassroots advocacy to address the root causes of abuse, neglect and indifference. PAWS envisions the world to be a place where all people recognize the intrinsic value of animal life, are mindful of the impact of their daily behaviors and choices on animals, and consistently demonstrate compassion and respect.

Caring for Companion Animals
Through professional and compassionate care, effective programs at our shelter and beyond, and collaboration with community partners, we strive for a future where no companion animal suffers and each has a warm, loving home. Our goal is to build a safety net for companion animals, not just for those in our shelter but to those in our community as a whole.

Healing Our Wild Neighbors
PAWS provides world-class medical and rehabilitative care to sick, injured and orphaned wild animals from across the Pacific Northwest. We also train future professionals and share our experiences with colleagues in the field in our continual effort to ensure high standards of wildlife rehabilitation and veterinary medicine in our region and beyond.

Empowering our Community through Education and Advocacy
PAWS shares practical guidance on companion animal care and tips for solving and preventing conflicts with wildlife, through creative classroom presentations, hands-on workshops, outreach events and one-on-one discussions, as well as through the media. By empowering people to make compassionate choices in their daily lives and to take meaningful action, PAWS creates a better world for animals.

Recent Successes and Current Challenges

PAWS Foster Care program grew by leaps and bounds in 2012. Through this life-saving program, volunteers helped care for more than 1,600 animals in their homes, including an astounding 1,080 kittens—double the number of kittens PAWS cared for in 2011. By placing so many animals with foster volunteers - whether they are recovering from surgery or simply too young to be spayed or neutered - PAWS Companion Animal Shelter is able to care for more animals in our shelter with the assistance of these heroic volunteers.

During PAWS 45-year history, we've cared for hundreds of thousands of cats, dogs and wild animals in Washington State and still countless more through advocacy and education. With your support for PAWS programs, we'll continue to save the precious lives of animals for many more years to come.

Progressive Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) is one of the most established and sophisticated animal welfare agencies in King County and has become a leading voice for animals in Washington State. In addition to their well-known companion animal work, PAWS runs a full-service rehabilitation facility and hospital devoted to wildlife.

Proven Success
PAWS has strong name recognition and respect as an organization working in animal welfare. They are the only organization in the state with a full-time veterinary team on-site to help with wildlife rehabilitation. They provide practical experience and training for veterinary and rehabilitation students, attracting students from all over the country due to their unique combination of learning activities.

Use of Best Practices
PAWS is unique in its work with not just companion animals, but also wildlife protection and community education, all under one roof. They work to help people understand the effect of human actions on wildlife and learn how humans can take an active role in the stewardship of maintaining the environmental and ecological balance of the earth. Additionally, they provide humane education in schools and informal community education programs throughout the region. Their wildlife rehabilitation program focuses on limited human contact to provide a safe haven for animals while keeping them wild.

Sustainability
Government partners and individuals have come to rely upon PAWS as a resource for the wild animals they find in their backyards, on mountain trails, and along the shores. As the County has struggled with providing animal shelter services, PAWS has worked with cities to fill the gap, an important service that could be threatened by local government budget issues. PAWS launched a capital campaign in 2011 to support the purchase of a larger facility.
