Q-Squared Men

Description

In 1995, a group of men envisioned an event that would remove gay, bisexual, and transgendered men from the stress and confinement of the city to build a sense of community. This event, the first CAMP, took place over Labor Day weekend of 1996, with the CAMPers asked to leave their attitude behind and open themselves up to the possibilities of relating to other men as friends and brothers. CAMP received its name from an acronym reflective of its goal: Come And Meet People.  A dedicated and persistent volunteer community (a.k.a. The Boyz in the Woods) has made it all happen. Originally produced in collaboration with Gay City Health Project, CAMP’s increasingly complex planning process, along with a desire to expand, prompted the creation of a new organization dedicated to the support of CAMP and to strengthen our community. Q-Squared Men, is a non-profit, volunteer-driven organization dedicated to supporting CAMP and related community-based activities.

Mission Statement
The mission of Q-Squared is to improve the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health of sexual minority men by building a stronger sense of community, increasing individual responsibility, and improving self-esteem. It is our strong belief that community building and diversity can best be achieved through a volunteer-driven organization. By empowering volunteers with the task of building community, each individual will have a greater stake in the outcome. We are committed to serving a constituency that is reflective of the diversity of our community.

Q-Squared Men Programs

Q-Spring is a chance to gather with other men to reflect on, embrace, and celebrate who you are, where you have been, and where you are headed. Discover new parts of yourself and enjoy the company of other men in a non-judgmental, attitude-free atmosphere.

CAMP is held each year at a private retreat center nestled among towering trees with scenic trails and rivers. Stay in modern cabins with hot showers and modern conveniences or pitch your own tent and sleep under the stars. Meals are prepared by the on site staff and are enjoyed family style. CAMP (short for “Come and Meet People”) is a place to connect with fellow Gay, Bisexual and Transgender men; the place to shed attitudes and dissolve boundaries. It is a place to learn about yourself, to forge lasting friendships and develop a deeper sense of community.  It’s a magical and wondrous experience you will never forget!

Recent Successes and Current Challenges

Our event in the spring called Qspring was very successful, as was the Labor Day weekend CAMP event. Each year we do a follow up survey to gauge the success of our events. Our surveys show an overwhelmingly positive reaction. Including responses directly relating to our goals of a healthier, stronger community.

Our current needs are relating to financing for scholarships. We feel that doing our best to help the less fortunate attend our events is of extreme importance. Private donors have been our only source for these scholarships. Also, because we hold our CAMP event in a remote location (for strategic purposes) many people cannot get to our event. In the past we had been able to provide a bus at some cost to the attendees. But because of the economy, prices have gone up dramatically. This past year we felt one of the reasons for a decline in numbers was due to lack of transportation.
