Queen Anne High School Alumni Association

Description

The Queen Anne High School Alumni Association (QAHSAA) was formed in 1981 after the closure of Queen Anne High School (QAHS) in Seattle, WA. Many prominent and successful citizens were graduates of QAHS and it was important to not lose this legacy because of the school closing. The Association wanted to continue support for education of our children and established a scholarship program to benefit worthy students who attended QAHS or were descendents of attendees. Further, the Association promoted the fellowship of alumni by sponsoring regular alumni events and supporting the scheduled class reunions each year. A comprehensive newsletter, called the KUAY (QA) is issued to over 11,000 alumni twice a year to provide news, articles and announcements of interest to our alumni, and as a fundraising effort for our scholarship program.

Programs

Queen Anne High School Alumni Association Programs

Funded by the generosity of our donors and other fundraising activities, we provide between 30 and 40 scholarships each year, 409 scholarships to date, to worthy students with at least one per year targeted for vocational education. The annual value of these scholarships ranges between $15,000 and $20,000.

We produce each year two newsletters of 16 pages each that are mailed to about 11,000 alumni world-wide.

Annually, we organize and conduct three all-class luncheon events in Seattle open to all alumni of QAHS, and we provide direct staff support for about eight class reunions.

Recent Successes and Current Challenges

We have received many letters from scholarship recipients stating how the scholarship they received from us helped make it possible for them to go on to higher education.

We publish a comprehensive newsletter twice a year that is mailed to about 11,000 alumni of QAHS. This is a major fundraising vehicle for our scholarship program. Although the newsletter is created by volunteers, the cost of printing and mailing exceeds $12,000 annually. Our greatest need to find general operating funds to produce and mail this newsletter without having to take funds away from our Scholarship Endowment.
