Safe Crossings Foundation Programs

Safe Crossings Foundation is a major funder of Camp Erin, a traditional camp that emphasizes fun and summer play while also providing support and education to kids who are grieving the loss of a loved one. In addition to typical camp activities, Camp Erin provides opportunities for healing and companionship not found in other settings. Camp Erin offers a unique caring environment and an opportunity for campers to be with other kids like themselves who are experiencing the same things.

Funding from Safe Crossing Foundation supports one-on-one counseling of parents and extended family members from trained counselors on staff at Safe Crossings Program. Major funding also supports parent/child grief support groups that are offered to parents and children quarterly. A Safe Crossings Program counselor facilitates each group; the parents meet separately from the children due to the different way each experiences the grief process.

Safe Crossings Foundation funds grief support groups for children and teens, many held during the school day in area public and private schools, as requested by teachers and school counselors. This includes crisis response consultations, grief education, discussion groups, etc. to elementary, middle, and high schools after the sudden death of a student, staff member or parent.

Recent Successes and Current Challenges

Because of the funding provided by Safe Crossings Foundation to the Safe Crossings Program since 1989, almost 25,000 children in King County have received grief and bereavement counseling. That these services can continue at no cost to the kids or their families is in large part due to the funding that the Foundation provides.

Each year the number of children seeking individual counseling, kids wanting to attend Camp Erin, and schools requesting facilitated group support for grieving kids continues to grow. Due to the difficult economic times, families do not always have the resources needed to seek needed services. Funding from Safe Crossings Foundation is made possible because of the generous donors. We welcome any individual, corporation, or foundation to join us in our commitment to helping kids cope with grief.

Evaluation

Safe Crossings works to help grieving children avoid serious emotional, academic, and behavioral problems and feel less isolated, and more supported.

Proven Success
The Safe Crossings Program serves families from diverse economic, racial and ethnic backgrounds. Many of the families they help have limited financial resources, which are further strained by medical expenses and the loss of a wage earner.

For the past 20 years the Safe Crossings Program has been committed to research on how children deal differently with grief. The Foundation raises funds to support the Safe Crossings Program, collaborates with Safe Crossings staff on program direction, and raises public awareness of the need for grief counseling for children.

Financial Health
The sole purpose of the foundation is to be the primary funder of the Safe Crossings Grief Counseling Program and Camp Erin King County. In 2009, they embarked on several new fundraising initiatives. They invested in a donor database which has allowed staff to analyze donor trends and identify strategies to increase individual support. They continue to work with a grantwriter to identify funding opportunities within the foundation community. They hold a luncheon in the fall and over 800 people attend.
