Seattle Central Community College Foundation Programs

SCCC Foundation offers Seattle Central students scholarship opportunities to help them pay for their tuition, books and fees. With more than 40 different scholarships, there's a scholarship for students in all areas of study and academic levels. Students submit their applications in the spring and awards are made for the following academic year.

To ensure the academic success of Seattle Central students, the Foundation raises funds for its college-wide tutoring program. The service is free to students and allows them to receive additional instructions in a variety of subjects. Tutors are academic or individual community members who have demonstrated expertise in their subject areas.

The Foundation supports the SCCC child care program that provides quality care with developmentally appropriate, culturally relevant activities for children of students while they further their education and for staff or faculty while they work on campus. The child care center believes that children learn by doing, and it strives to provide each child with the supportive environment in which to develop its skills and abilities.

Recent Successes and Current Challenges

To further build upon the college's focus on academic excellence, SCCC has introduced an Honors Program. It enhances the classroom experience though demanding coursework and opportunities for service learning and leadership involvement. Additionally it gives them the chance to gain valuable undergraduate research skills. The College Success Program focuses on former foster youth, who have aged-out of the foster care system, continue and succeed in higher education. They receive mentoring, tutoring and life-skills training to help them establish or rebuild trust and a sense of accomplishment in their ability to personally succeed. Last year saw members of its inaugural group receive associate degrees and transfer to four-year institutions. Returning program participants have become informal mentors to new members starting their college careers.

SCCC focuses on educating and preparing students with the latest skills and knowledge to enter or return to the workforce. During an economic downturn, Seattle Central is poised and ready to respond to the economic vitality of our community through a skilled and educated workforce. People out of work returning to school to update their skills increases enrollment but also adds to the demand for financial aid. The number of SCCC students seeking scholarships has never been greater and SCCC Foundation scholarships offer them the opportunity to dedicate their efforts to complete their studies and get back to work.
