Seattle Jewish Chorale

Description

Seattle Jewish Chorale is a non-profit community-based choir that showcases the diversity of Jewish culture, history, and experience across time and geography. We are a volunteer-based, non-discriminatory organization, made up of 30 qualified Jewish and non-Jewish singers of all ages and backgrounds. Our concerts make learning about Jewish history and culture accessible and fun for a variety of audiences. We sing in many Jewish languages as well as various genres and styles (classical, folk, jazz, pop), often with audience “sing-alongs”. Guest soloists, instrumentalists, and dancers enrich texture and liveliness of performances; narration and program notes provide context.

Mission Statement
Seattle Jewish Chorale is an auditioned community choir whose mission is to engage audiences of all ages and backgrounds with the beauty and diversity of the Jewish experience by performing works from across the spectrum of the Jewish choral repertoire. Through its educational and entertaining performances, Seattle Jewish Chorale preserves, celebrates and advances the cultural heritage of world Jewry, and fosters unity, understanding and respect within the Jewish community, and between Jews and the wider community.

Seattle Jewish Chorale Programs

Seattle Jewish Chorale performs under the stellar direction of Mary Pat Graham. Our September-June performance seasons typically include several major productions in December and June, as well as outreach/community performances throughout the year. Performance venues have included Town Hall Seattle, the Seattle Jewish Film Festival, the Northwest Folklife Festival, and Seattle City Hall, among others. Performances take place throughout Greater Seattle. We are confident that we’re fulfilling our mission based on growing audience size each year, continuously sold-out concerts, increasing performance requests, and enthusiastic feedback:

  • "Wonderful! The music made this [Holocaust Memorial Day] commemoration truly heartfelt.—Dee Simon, Washington State Historical Education Resource Center
  • “…artistically engaging and culturally expressive… a wonderful reflection of lay Jewish commitment and identity.”—Rabbi Daniel Weiner, Temple DeHirsch Sinai
  • “…a reminder that music has the power to uplift and sustain us spiritually.”—Susan Monas, Congregation Beth Shalom

Promoting access to Jewish arts and education is a core value of Seattle Jewish Chorale. We provide scholarships for singers, non-revenue generating community/outreach performances, and a ‘pay what you can’ option for the un/underemployed at ticketed performances. Your support enables us to grow and sustain our organization while supporting our shared values.

Seattle Jewish Chorale promotes unity among diverse populations within and outside of the Jewish community, and helps the wider community see how Jewish culture and values overlap and connect with other cultures. Our audiences are Greater Seattle residents interested in Jewish choral music, cultural diversity, and preservation of Jewish heritage.

Recent Successes and Current Challenges

We are very proud of our artistic growth. As we celebrate our 5th anniversary, in addition to our standard local performances, we continue to expand our audiences. During Hanukkah we traveled to Olympia, WA, and are now gearing up for our first international tour to Victoria, BC. We have been invited by Congregation Emmanu’el to give a special performance in celebration of their 150th anniversary. Partnerships with local arts organizations have enabled us to include interfaith outreach. We performed at St. Mark’s Cathedral alongside Cathedral Children’s Choir, Choral Arts, and Abrace in Blessed Are the Peacemakers: An Interfaith 9/11 Memorial, where guest artists, along with Total Experience Gospel Choir, at Choir of the Sound's winter concert: Dare to Dream, Dream to Be Free.

Most Pressing Need
Seattle Jewish Chorale is a young volunteer-run organization that has documented success in expanding access to Jewish arts and education throughout Greater Seattle. Due to our successful growth, community demand for our performances is beginning to outpace our ability to fund our artistic programming solely out of our member dues and donations from friends and family. The economy has also impacted donation levels. Your donation goes directly to our artistic programming, enabling us to better serve our community.
