Sound Youth VISTA

Description

Since 1996 Sound Youth has placed AmeriCorps*VISTA members with partner nonprofit organizations. These organizations all share a common mission of empowering the young people of Seattle. Sound Youth VISTA members serve full time at these sites for one year. They develop infrastructure, expanding the reach of current programs or create new programs. Members hard work allows agencies to expand the reach of their services and to meet the growing needs of Seattle's at-risk youth.

Sound Youth VISTA is a program of The Church Council of Greater Seattle. While the parent organization is faith-based, the larger umbrella of AmeriCorps is a non-religious service organization. The services Sound Youth provides are not religious in nature, nor are they restricted by religious affiliation.

Mission Statement

Sound Youth VISTA Programs

Sound Youth currently partners with seven nonprofit organizations: Boys and Girls Club Joel E. Smilow Clubhouse at Rainier Vista, Catholic Community Services Youth Tutoring Program, Cleveland High School, Girls on the Run, the Hepatitis Education Project, Outdoors for All and YouthCare.

At these sites members do everything from provide health education to at-risk teens, to empowering youth with disabilities through outdoor recreation, to supporting commercially sexually exploited young women, to creating after school tutoring and enrichment programs.

Recent Successes and Current Challenges

Sound Youth seeks help to support VISTA members with trainings and education. Training allows members to more effectively serve the community by bringing new ideas to sites and increasing their effectiveness at capacity building.

Sound Youth is proud to have several sites graduating this year. Members were able to build successful, sustainable programs that reach Seattle's youth.
