Auburn Food Bank

Description

We are a food bank that serves people in need living within the Auburn School District. We do food distribution, 2 hot meal programs, holiday baskets and a backpack program. We also help with financial assistance for those in jeopardy of losing their home or having their power shut off. We offer a "home-bound" delivery service to those that have no other means by which to receive groceries.  During the cold weather months, we operate a "cold weather shelter."  Our goal is to reach as many people in need in our community to help better their lives.

Food Bank Services
We offer a combination of self-select shopping & a pre-bagged minimum standard bag. Clients are able to make choices that would best meet dietary & cultural needs as well as ensuring that they receive canned vegetables, fruit and protein. Clients are able to come to the food bank 2 times a month.

Community Supper
Our hot meal program provides 2 meals a week hosted at local churches. The Monday night supper focuses on homeless and low-income seniors and the Wednesday night supper focuses on low-income families. All the meals are healthy and nutritious and provide a place for people to enjoy a hot, cooked meal in a warm, safe environment while enjoying social interaction.

Financial Assistance
We provide financial assistance to people in jeopardy of losing their homes or having their utilities turned off. It is a first come - first serve basis and they have to have a 3 day notice to pay or vacate or a shut off notice. We are trying to help the people who need it most to keep them in their homes.

Recent Successes and Current Challenges

We are seeing an increasing number of returning clients. We are registering 12 new families a day, on average. With the poor economy those who are using our services need to continue to do so. We are seeing clients that have not been here for several years but are needing to utilize our services again. We are also seeing clients that were donors in the past several years.  Families are moving in together - working hard to keep a roof over their head and their bills paid.

Evaluation

The Auburn Food Bank provides food and emergency services to individuals living within the Auburn School District.

Proven Success
The Food Bank is housed in a King County Housing Authority low-income housing project. The Food Bank is typically the first agency that people come to for support. They serve 145 clients daily.

Special programs include a hot meal program two nights a week, a back pack program providing 150 students with weekend meals, and a delivery program.

Collaboration
The Food Bank partners with the City of Auburn to meet the diverse needs of their community. This November the Food Bank contacted the city to see if there was a way to provide shelter on the snowy nights. The city provided the building, cots and blankets and Food Bank employees staffed the overnight shelter.

Northwest Harvest, the LDS cannery and the South King County Food Coalition are working together to help can food. Northwest Harvest is providing the food, the LDS cannery is providing the equipment, cans, boxes and labels, the South King County Food Banks are providing the labor. The food banks of South King County will receive the canned product for distribution.

Use of Best Practices
Fresh produce is a top priority. They receive produce from local gardens, Moseby Brothers Farms and the Auburn Farmers Market.

Financial Health
They host a very successful annual Harvest Breakfast. 500 people attend and they raise $65,000.
