The Inverse Opera

Description

The Inverse Opera's goals include producing one cabaret a month in a no-cover, casual setting and two larger, staged productions each season. We strive to ensure each performance is affordable, yet of the highest quality possible. We hope to continue to ally ourselves with as many artists and companies as possible to produce exciting works for the opera and theater communities.

The Inverse Opera is a proud Partner Artist with Shunpike.

Mission Statement
The Inverse Opera creates and presents musical performances exploring the unique storytelling aspects of the classically trained voice. By taking the exquisite music and poignant stories from opera and musical theater to your neighborhood pub or local theater, The Inverse Opera lets you enjoy history's greatest pieces on a level accessible to all.

The Inverse Opera Programs

Our 2013-2014 season will see The Inverse Opera performing cabarets in locations around Puget Sound.  We will be returning to SecondStory Repertory for a series of lightly-staged evenings of song, and concluding each of those with an opportunity for the audience to sing with our accompanists (we call it Piano-roke).  We look forward to further collaboration with Seattle's chapter of Opera-on-Tap for an evening of classical song, and are planning to mount an educational look into the canon of 26 Italian Songs and Arias, the go-to book for all students of classical singing.

Recent Successes and Current Challenges

The Inverse Opera enjoyed a wonderful reception at ACT - A Contemporary Theatre in our collaboration with Seattle Dance Project for their Project 5.  The two companies' talented artists combined in a delightful rendition of Johannes Brahms' Liebeslieder Waltzes, choreographed by Mark Morris alum Penny Hutchinson.  With over 1,000 tickets sold and a full house for our student performance, we were thrilled to offer such a high quality performance that drew dance afficionadoes, opera enthusiasts, and theater-goers alike.

TIO is excited about our educational look into 26 Italian Songs and Arias. If you've studied voice, you own this book. Some of the finest singers in the Seattle area will perform these "beginner" pieces at the highest level of artistry, and teach about performance practice and technique. We hope to take this show around to high schools and colleges, as well as perform in a more traditional concert setting.
