Description

Washington CAN! is a statewide, grassroots lobbying organization. With over 35,000 members, we are the largest consumer advocacy group in the state. We work on a range of issues with the broad aim of bringing about greater economic and social justice in our state and the country. Our board represents a coalition of groups including labor, senior, faith, and community organizations. Our field and telephone canvasses do education, activation, and fundraising with our members. Our strength as an organization depends on our members' involvement.

Mission Statement
The mission of Washington CAN is to achieve economic fairness in order to establish a democratic society characterized by racial and social justice, with respect for diversity, and a decent quality of life for those who reside in Washington State.

Washington CAN! has a bold plan to guarantee that all Washington residents receive the same quality health care that our elected officials have had for years. Our health care system is failing. We're paying more and more, but you can't count on coverage when you really need it. And while skyrocketing health care costs are leaving us behind, insurance company profits are on the rise. We're calling on lawmakers to guarantee quality, affordable health coverage for all. We are likewise working to ensure that racial disparities in our health care systems are addressed.

Immigration is an American experience. Yet because of our broken immigration system, every day thousands of people are denied basic civil and human rights, are separated from their families, and are exploited in the workplace. Washington CAN! believes that a just immigration system should provide a path to citizenship, protect all workers, reunite families and ensure equal access to justice. Immigration reform is a core racial and economic justice issue and Washington CAN! will fight for these principles at the local, state, and national levels.

Washington CAN! is also working on economic justice issues such as tax fairness. Our elected officials need to be courageous and stand up for what is right for the long term health of the WA State economy AND ITS TAXPAYERS - a tax system where everyone pays a fair, but not unreasonable, share. We need a permanent solution to current revenue shortfalls and budget crises. This will only come from a long-term, voter-driven campaign for reform. Our state needs to get serious about finding ways to fix the recurring budget crises and pay for our burgeoning health, education, safety and economic needs.

Recent Successes and Current Challenges

Washington CAN! has had great success in building our Small Business for Health Care Coalition. Small business owners and their employees are three times as likely to be uninsured as other state residents, and those who are insured struggle to maintain coverage for themselves and their employees. In response to this crisis, Washington CAN! began organizing small businesses in 2005. The Small Business for Secure Health Care Coalition is now a recognized national leader in the development of a business constituency for health care reform, with more than 2000 active members around the state.

As a grassroots organization, membership means everything to us. It means more lobbying power as we add to our base of over 35,000 individual members across the state. It means more financial resources to expand our work and take on new issues. It means more progress on the issues we care about and more concrete steps to a truly equitable society. Washington CAN! is continually seeking new leaders and new organizations to partner with.

Evaluation

Washington CAN! brings people together to change policies and practices and advance equity and opportunity. They use their expertise in community organizing to mobilize uninsured and underinsured Washington residents.

Proven Success
Washington CAN! has a long track record of combating economic disparities across Washington state. They are a key player in ensuring increased access to health care both locally and nationally. With the passage of the Health Care Reform they are looking at statewide implementation issues and ensuring that consumers and people who lack adequate health care have a voice in the process. The state has a lot to figure out about how it is going to work and Washington CAN! wants to make sure that the consumer voice is part of the conversation.

They have been able to achieve victories at the local and state levels by combining grassroots organizing with strong communication and media outreach as well as research and policy work.

Leadership
Washington CAN! has a leadership development program that recruits and trains leaders from diverse parts of our community. They are a member-driven organization and allow their members to set the agenda and priorities for the organization. They have over 600 people participating in the leadership programs and recruited 10,000 new members last year. They developed the Main Street Alliance of Washington, a 2,000 member coalition of small business owners who are advocating for health care access for uninsured small business owners and their low-income employees.

Collaboration
Washington CAN! is involved in many collaborations. They co-chair Healthy Washington Coalitions, a 90-mermber coalition of advocates, providers, labor and faith leaders who are struggling to achieve quality, affordable health care for all. This coalition is working to implement state and federal health care reform and achieve quality, affordable health care for all Washingtonians.

Financial Health
As of July, Washington CAN! has raised over 80% of their 2011 budget. They have cash reserves of six months. Currently 25% of their funding comes from small donors. They have launched a campaign to turn small donors into major donors through one-on-one visits and house parties, with the goal of raising an additional $25,000. They receive foundation support from Robert Wood Johnson, Kellogg Foundation, and Marguerite Casey Foundation."
