Our Approach
We engage and collaborate with a broad base of constituents every step of the way. With advocacy groups, policymakers, coalitions and local communities, the Washington State Budget & Policy Center works to achieve its goals through:

  • Comprehensive Budget and Policy Analysis - We identify and analyze current fiscal issues and priorities; track budgeting trends over time; and analyze the impact of both revenue and spending policies on Washingtonians - especially low and moderate-income residents.
  • Alternative Proposals and Effective Solutions - We provide analyses and evidence-based alternatives in all areas of budget and fiscal policy. We develop budget solutions, long-term fiscal strategies, and identify best practices from other states as alternatives to existing programs and policies.
  • Public Awareness and Civic Engagement - We use our research and analysis to educate the public about the facts, enabling greater civic understanding and participation in state budgeting matters. We use many methods of communication to ensure that our findings have the greatest impact on public policy debates.

Evaluation

The Washington State Budget & Policy Center develops progressive solutions based on sound research and works with community partners to shape the debate on budget and tax reform.

Best practices
WSBPC organizes their work around five key strategies: Shaping the debate through effective messaging; making the budget work for all Washingtonians by conducting in-depth analysis, promoting reform, and providing recommendations; improving our state revenue system; generate high quality data that gets utilized in policy debates; develop policy solutions so that all Washingtonians prosper.

Proven Success
WSBPC consciously decided to become a more public organization over the past year, including finding new ways to share data and research, as well as supporting other organization’s advocacy work and coalition building. As a result, they have appeared in or have been quoted in the media 30 times in the past year. Additionally, they were recently selected for the Strategic Development Program, an initiative of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. This investment will add to their current staff capacity and enable the organization to play a larger role in the public debate.

Collaboration
Strategic partnerships are critical for the organization. WSBPC relies on outside organizations to carry their message through advocacy, community organizing, and outreach. Outside organizations rely on WSBPC to provide accurate, timely, and reliable data to support their work. Partnerships include labor organizations, faith communities, environmental, healthcare, education, social and human service groups among many others. A recently enhanced partnership with The Children’s Alliance has resulted in WSPBC housing Washington KIDS COUNT.
