Washington State Opportunity Scholarship Programs

The Washington State Opportunity Scholarship supports students pursuing degrees and careers in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and health care. Scholarship funds are generated through a unique public-private partnership among major employers like Boeing and Microsoft and the Washington State Legislature. With administrative leadership from the College Success Foundation, which has a track record in scholarship and mentorship coordination, we are poised to make a real difference in the futures of thousands of talented, low- and middle-income students.

Recent Successes and Current Challenges

Businesses and the Washington State Legislature have joined forces to fulfill the promise of better education and career opportunities for Washington students. Together they have created a unique public-private partnership including major employers like Boeing and Microsoft.

To date, Microsoft and Boeing have dedicated $50 million to the Washington Opportunity Scholarship and the state of Washington has recently committed $25 million. The goal is to raise $500 million in private funds, matched with state support, for a total of $1 billion by 2020.

“We would like to see more Washington students qualified to compete for the abundance of job openings in high-demand fields across our state,” said Brad Smith, WSOS Board chair and Microsoft’s executive vice president of legal and corporate affairs. “Our goal is to provide financial support so that as many students as possible can obtain a STEM or health care degree. These scholarships can turn a student’s college aspirations into reality.”
