West Seattle Helpline Programs
West Seattle Helpline provides vital support services to individuals and families working hard to recover from crisis and get back on track. We do this through three emergency assistance programs:
At our free clothing store, “The Clothesline,” we provide new and like-new clothing to those in need free of charge. We have clothing for infants, children, teens, and adults, including specialized clothing such as school uniforms and professional attire for job interviews. Scheduling an appointment is easy and the Clothesline is open to all Seattle residents.
Rent and Utility Assistance
For low-income individuals and families, an unexpected crisis or financial hardship can be devastating. We provide one-time emergency assistance to keep our neighbors from falling into the cycle of poverty. Our support helps them keep the lights on, the water running, and often is the safeguard that prevents families from becoming homeless. Our application for financial assistance is available to West Seattle residents in the following zip codes: 98106, 98116, 98126, 98136, and 98146.
Whether it’s a medical appointment, a job interview, or trip taking the kids to school, our transportation assistance program helps our low-income neighbors get where they need to go to provide for themselves and their families. In partnership with King County Metro, we administer thousands of dollars worth of bus tickets to those in need every year. Our application for transportation assistance is available to West Seattle residents in the following zip codes: 98106, 98116, 98126, 98136, and 98146.
Recent Successes and Current Challenges
West Seattle Helpline recently adopted a new program services model designed to streamline our operations and provide support more quickly. The result has been a 50% reduction in wait times
for emergency financial assistance. This new model allows us to prevent more evictions, water, gas, and electricity shutoffs, and means more stability for individuals and families recovering from a crisis. We anticipate this new model will also allow us to help more individuals and families as our delivery system uses resources more efficiently.
Our greatest need is for investment in our work from large foundations, public institutions, and corporations. We are incredibly fortunate to have an amazing group of individual donors and small family foundations in the West Seattle community. They have supported our work and made it possible to help thousands of neighbors every year.
Our model has proven to be effective but the need is currently greater than our resources. We have a strategic plan in place to amplify our capacity by building new partnerships with other community organizations, using data and mapping, and leveraging untapped neighborhood resources to help more families in a more comprehensive, long-lasting and sustainable way. All the elements of this plan are in place--it will launch as soon as we can procure the necessary investment in the form of grants or sponsorships. If your giving priorities align with our mission, please do not hesitate to contact us to learn more about how your contribution will help us take our mission to the next level!
Additionally, we always welcome those interested in donating their time to support West Seattle Helpline. We are a volunteer-driven organization. Each new volunteer means more of our neighbors get the help they need!
