Wing-It Productions Programs

Celebrating our 21st year, Jet City Improv’s flagship productions include six original unscripted plays, along with our Twisted Flicks re-dubbed movies (a new Twisted Flick each month).  Our theater in the U-District is alive and buzzing with excitement during the six or seven shows performed weekly. We also host and produce the five-day Seattle Festival of Improv, and the Northwest Convention of Intercollegiate Improv.

With six original unscripted plays each year, Jet City Improv is the largest producer of new work in Seattle! Since acquiring our theater in 2003, we’ve seen tremendous growth in our company, both in shows and education classes. We anticipate more than 30,000 people will visit our theater this year.

We offer an array of improv classes to teens and adults at our theater, and in the field. Catering to companies large and small, our Team Building Workshops and “Comedy-to-Go” shows are growing in popularity.

Our Youth Outreach Programs make performing arts accessible to students wherever they fall on the spectrum of needs:

  • Our partnership with the King County Juvenile Detention Center includes free improv classes to incarcerated youth, and the Bridge Program, which helps youth transition from detention back into the community.
  • Free improv classes to homeless and at-risk youth, at the Sanctuary Arts Center,
  • After-school classes at seven high schools and one middle school,
  • The Seattle Open improvisational theater tournament for high school students.

Recent Successes and Current Challenges

During the last few years Jet City Improv has become the top-producing improvisational theater in the country, providing accessible shows for the entire community. In addition, we have continued to expand our outreach, providing free improvisational theater classes to homeless and incarcerated youth.

Artistically, our shows have been recognized nationally – performing at festivals around the country, including Austin, South Carolina, and Chicago. Our theater has become known as the hub for improvisational arts in the Pacific Northwest by groups locally and nationally. Our work has been reviewed and described as groundbreaking, and our audiences  continue to grow (about 10% over previous years).

Informed by Jet City Improv’s continued growth during the last few years in particular, and guided by our strategic plan, the board took the major step of creating a Managing Director position to provide professional guidance and stability. This position was filled in April, 2011, marking a major step as we mature from a small, founder-lead organization to a regional improv powerhouse.

Now, we are focusing intently on how we can enhance the physical space and amenities available at the theater to improve the overall audience experience.

Evaluation

Wing-It Productions fills a unique niche in the local scene by producing a broad array of improvisational theatre productions.

Proven Success
Wing-It is well run, makes very good use of their theatre space and effectively takes advantage of revenue-generating capabilities. It is particularly effective at reaching younger audiences and introducing them to theatre.

Best Practices
At their theatre space located in the north University District Wing-It produces over eight shows a week ranging including: late-night Jet City Improv, children's matinee shows, Wing-It Presents (unscripted plays presented every other month) and Twisted Flicks (movies with improvised dialogue performed by live actors).
