World Association for Children and Parents

Description

Since 1976, WACAP has found permanent and loving adoptive homes for 10,000 orphaned, abandoned, abused and neglected children from US foster care and international orphanages and helped 200,000 others receive nutrition, healthcare, education, and essential supplies. The majority of children finding families through WACAP face barriers to adoption due to older age, medical or emotional conditions, disabilities, or other special needs.

Domestic Adoption
More than 400,000 children live in temporary foster care across the US, with over 9,000 here in Washington. 1 in 4 is waiting for adoption. WACAP places these children in permanent families through the US Kids Adoption Program and raises awareness of local foster kids in need of adoption through our “A Family for Me” program, which earned an Adoption Excellence Award from the US government.

International Adoption
WACAP helps orphaned and abandoned children in China, Ethiopia, India, Korea, Russia, Taiwan, and Thailand join adoptive homes in the US. We are known for adhering to the highest ethical standards and finding families for children with physical and developmental disabilities as well as babies. Through our Family Finders Program, WACAP proactively recruits adoptive parents for children who are at risk of aging out of orphanages without ever knowing the love and safety of a permanent home.

Adoptive Family Education and Support
In order to become a life-long resource for their children, adoptive families must be educated about their children’s needs and the best ways to meet them. WACAP offers family education classes and support groups both in person and online and refers families to additional resources in their local communities, ensuring that they have all the information they need. WACAP is always there for families, whether it is a month after the adoption or 15 years later.

Recent Successes and Current Challenges

Three years ago, siblings Alex and Anna were living in Washington State foster care, desperate to join a permanent family together despite knowing that their chances were slim, as both children were school-aged and had emotional and educational special needs. WACAP was able to find a local family that was interested in adopting Alex and Anna and prepared the parents to address the children’s needs. Today the siblings are thriving. Alex is an honor student and Anna is reading above grade level.

WACAP's Promise Fund supports our work to find adoptive families for foster children and children in international orphanages who have special needs. Consider making a gift to the Promise Fund to help some of the world's most vulnerable children come home to loving and permanent families.
