Seattle Center for Book Arts

Description

SCBA inspires and teaches individuals to make books. Our tag line, Make A Book Today! simplifies our mission. The medium, be it historic or contemporary, digital, tactile or otherwise, is left to personal preference. We hope to kindle the creative fire in individuals of all ages and walks of life to make books; make books to keep, make books to share, make books to give, make books to store that which you cherish, make books to simply just create.

It is an exciting time for the book! SCBA exists to bear witness to, celebrate, and share the book as an ever-changing form. We hope you'll join us on this wild ride!

Programs

Seattle Center for Book Arts Programs

SCBA provides educational opportunities and hands-on practice in the medium of book arts to seasoned artists, book arts enthusiasts and new communities by offering:
  • Drop-in book-making classes in partnership with Seattle Public Library Summer Reading Program to youth and adults at city-wide branches.
  • Quarterly introductory and continuing book arts classes teaching contemporary and historic book forms and printing techniques.
  • Annual community events such as Eat a Book Today! Seattle's Annual Edible Book Festival, celebrating books, food & the people who love them, and Make A Book Tonight! a evening to celebrate book + paper arts. SCBA's annual events are family friendly and provide hands-on activities for book arts enthusiasts of all ages.

Recent Successes and Current Challenges

SCBA is going mobile! We recently received a grant from 4Culture to design and outfit a MobileClassroom to take book arts to the streets, giving SCBA the tools to enhance current programs and events, while granting mobility to meet demand in the community. The cart includes a hand-cranked vintage letterpress, book-binding tools, as well as a computer and digital projector. We are geared up to unveil SCBA's MobileClassroom by the end of 2011 for use in our classes, workshops and events.

Our current goal is to raise funds to purchase a dedicated vehicle for the MobileClassroom, thus giving SCBA the opportunity to bring hands-on book arts experiences to new communities, including schools, libraries, and community centers.
