Aid for Hurricane Irma’s Victims

Ways to assist the relief and recovery efforts in Florida and the Caribbean

September 10, 2017

With Hurricane Irma cutting a wide path through Florida and weaving a tale of destruction and flooding, residents there will have both short-term and long-term needs.

To meet the immediate needs of people without power, shelter or adequate food supplies, the American Red Cross is aiding people across the state.

Longer term, many communities will need help in the recovery efforts. Two of our sister community foundations has established critical funds that will be key in rebuilding communities.

In South Florida, the Miami Foundation has established three relief funds, one for relief and recovery, one for Caribbean communities and a third to support marginalized communities affected by the storm. And in Central Florida, the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay has worked with multiple partners to create a Disaster Relief and Recovery Fund that will aid nonprofit efforts across eight counties.

As in the case around the country, community foundations are long-term partners who know the community deeply and stand ready to do the challenging work of rebuilding and investing in communities.
