Yesterday was a big day for the more than 1,700 nonprofits participating in the seventh annual GiveBIG! Donors raised $19 million for local nonprofits, representing eight categories of our Healthy Community Framework – arts & culture, basic needs, economic opportunity, education, environment, health & wellness, vibrant communities, and global giving.
Based on our preliminary figures, the $19 million helps bring the seven-year combined GiveBIG total to just under $100 million. This 2017 total includes online donations, realized matching gifts, employer matching funds and Dollars for Change awards. A record 1,701 nonprofits participated and the average gift amount was $154. The largest category of giving was for arts and culture nonprofits.
“Once again, we thank our community, partners and sponsors for their generosity in supporting more than 1,700 organizations providing vital services in our community and beyond,” said Tony Mestres, Seattle Foundation President & CEO. “The new model we introduced this year of enlisting nonprofits to secure matching funds really powered the success of GiveBIG, adding more than $4.5 million to the total.”
One of the appealing aspects of GiveBIG to both donors and nonprofits is that online donations made during GiveBIG had the potential to grow through Dollars for Change. This program awarded additional gifts of $2,500 to 150 nonprofits through a computer-generated selection process. Additionally, businesses and individuals provided a total of more than $7.5 million in matching funds to 564 nonprofits — providing the opportunity to double a donation’s value. All Dollars for Change winners are listed here: www.givebigseattle.org/leaderboard -- congrats to all the winning donors and nonprofits!
The $375,000 in funding for Dollars for Change was provided by Seattle Foundation, corporate sponsors, local foundations and individual philanthropists. This year GiveBIG is presented by Seattle Foundation with support of presenting partners, Ballmer Group, KING 5, Seattle Sounders FC, The Seattle Times and Wyncote Foundation NW. Lead supporters include Amazon, Aven Foundation, BECU, The Boeing Company, Medina Foundation, Microsoft, Microsoft Alumni Network, Soulcraft Allstars and STAR 101.5.
A huge thanks to the donors, nonprofits and community partners who made GiveBIG 2017 a success. You made it count, now more than ever.
