Progressive Revenue Briefing
Wednesday, March 2, 2022
1:30 – 3:00 p.m. PST
This event is cosponsored by Progress Alliance, Seattle Foundation, Social Venture Partners Seattle, and Washington Women’s Foundation.
Washington state has the most upside down tax code in the country. That means in our state - the average working class person pays a higher percentage of their income in taxes than a high-income earner. This has contributed to our region’s inability to achieve shared prosperity and inhibits economic vitality for our entire community. Community leaders, advocates, researchers, and policymakers have been working for years to begin to make improvements in our tax code.
In 2021, Washingtonians came together across race and place to ask lawmakers to pass a tax on capital gains. Leaders in Olympia passed a commonsense capital gains tax - making Washington one of the 42 states with a capital gains tax. In Washington we'll see $500 million every year invested in early learning, childcare, and public schools. This effort not only makes our tax code fairer, but also invests in the critical infrastructure we need to make sure all Washingtonians have a chance to thrive.
