Laying the Foundation for a Just Future: Our Impact Initiatives.

As we step into spring, a season of renewal and possibility, I want to take a moment to reflect on our collective journey—one defined by resilience, vision, and a commitment to justice.

Every day, we witness the strength, tenacity, and brilliance of community in action. Grassroots organizers shaping policies. Nonprofit leaders expanding access to housing, childcare, and transit. Advocates ensuring that access is not just a goal, but a reality. And at the heart of it all—you. Whether as fundholders, grantee partners, or allies in this work, your dedication fuels lasting change.

But we must be clear-eyed about the moment we are in. Budgets are tightening at the city, county, and state levels. Philanthropy is under increasing scrutiny. Efforts to dismantle equity initiatives are gaining momentum. The challenges are real, but our resolve is stronger. Now is not the time to pull back—it is the time to push forward, together.

What We’re Learning

In light of the current political climate, the Impact team is listening ever more carefully to leaders on the frontlines by collecting feedback from grantee partners. Leaders from organizations supported in 2024 and the first quarter of 2025 were surveyed.

Based on their expertise, here are their expressed needs, guiding us toward the priorities we must embrace together.

This Moment Feels Different
Nonprofits are navigating a uniquely chaotic and uncoordinated political climate, sparking a heightened sense of urgency—many describe it as a true “break glass in case of emergency” moment.

Funding Instability Is Widespread
Grantees are at risk of losing 5–50% of their federal funding. Fear of cuts is rippling through public, private, and individual donor streams alike, amplified by backlash against DEI efforts.

Wellness and Safety Are Front and Center
From legal defense and cybersecurity to emotional support and healing strategies, organizations are prioritizing both physical and emotional safety for their teams and communities.

Unrestricted, Multi-Year Funding Is Critical
Flexibility in funding remains the top request. It gives nonprofits the autonomy to respond effectively in real time without being hamstrung by red tape.

Collaboration and Resource Sharing Matter More Than Ever
There’s a growing call for coordinated funder responses, pooled emergency funds, and shared tools—like legal support, risk assessment templates, and advocacy training.

These insights are guiding us in 2025, ensuring our investments lead to deep, sustainable change rather than merely short-term financial transactions.

The Impact We Created Together

Thanks to our shared commitment, in 2024 we were able to invest:

  • $11.1 million in total grantmaking
  • 173 grants supporting 126 organizations
  • 85% of grantee organizations led by Black, Indigenous, and People of Color

These numbers represent more than dollars—they reflect real lives changed. Families securing stable housing. Young people accessing new opportunities. Community leaders building a stronger, more just future.

Why This Work Matters More Than Ever
Let’s be honest—this work isn’t easy. Across the country, we are seeing attempts to roll back diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. Pressure is mounting to shrink funding for community-driven solutions. Some are even questioning the role of nonprofits and philanthropy in driving systemic change.

But we cannot lose hope. More than ever, we must stand firm in our commitment to:

  • Advancing equity through data-driven strategies and bold investments.
  • Defending nonprofits against efforts to weaken their impact.
  • Advocating for policies that ensure philanthropy remains a force for justice.

Where We’re Headed in 2025

This year, we are doubling down on three critical priorities—because they are foundational to a thriving, equitable region:

  • Housing – Expanding innovative financing tools to increase affordable housing and uplift BIPOC developers.
  • Transit – Protecting local and state investments in climate-friendly, accessible public transportation.
  • Childcare – Strengthening policies and funding collaborations to expand affordable childcare options.

None of this can happen in isolation. Dismantling systemic barriers requires all of us—funders, nonprofits, advocates, and community leaders—working together to drive lasting solutions that provide families with access to quality childcare, affordable housing, and reliable access to transit. Philanthropy must go beyond grantmaking. It must foster deep collaboration and shift power to achieve a more joyful region for all.

As we look ahead, I invite you to stay engaged. Ask the hard questions. Challenge the status quo. Invest in community-led solutions. Speak up when it matters most. Because when we stand together, we don’t just imagine a more just and joyful future—we create it.

Philanthropy with Purpose. Community with Power. A Future of Joy for All.

With gratitude and determination,

Lindsay Goes Behind, Chief Impact Officer
