As we watch what unfolds in our nation’s capital, the onslaught of recent policy actions could have far-reaching and devastating effects on communities across our state. The basic services we need to navigate through life – whether access to affordable food or public transportation – could all be jeopardized. The humanity and rights of our most marginalized neighbors – from immigrant to queer communities – are being challenged in unprecedented ways.
While these times are trying, we cannot lose hope in what is possible. At Seattle Foundation, we envision a joyful region of shared prosperity, belonging, and justice. We strive to foster a community where we all have what we need to live a full and thriving life and can navigate this world free from discrimination and violence. We believe that policies and systems should not be barriers to our success as individuals – no matter who we are or where we come from. This focus will remain our north star as we navigate what is ahead.
It is our responsibility to listen to and invest in the leaders and organizations in our region and state who are on the frontlines of creating a more just world. There are incredible organizations and activists in Washington state fighting for children to be born safely and parents to have access to quality, affordable childcare. Leaders from the private, public and nonprofit sectors are working hard to ensure that everyone has a safe and affordable home in a neighborhood of their choice. Advocates across the state continue to advance important policy solutions for public transportation options that help us stay connected.
We will continue to support these efforts and share these stories. We will step up to protect our community-based partners who may be challenged in this time of targeted and calculated attacks against equity-focused work. We call on our funding peers to join us in doing the same.
Because community is more than just where we live. It’s the shared understanding that our joy and well-being are tied to one another, and it takes all of us to create a joyful region where every person can thrive.
