Response to the Violent Actions at the U.S. Capitol Building

In response to the violent actions at the U.S. Capitol building in Washington D.C., Seattle Foundation releases the following statement:

Seattle Foundation condemns the anti-democratic violence in the U.S. Capitol building today. These attacks threaten many pillars of our democracy: the integrity of our elections, the peaceful transition of power, and the ability of lawmakers to govern our country safely.

This moment in history, like so many this past year, reveals how broken our systems and society are. These tragic events shine a light, once again, on what must be addressed at a deeper level in our country.

We stand firm in our commitment to strengthen our democracy – including by removing barriers and elevating the voices of underrepresented and marginalized communities, particularly those who are Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. There is no doubt that today’s insurrection was a deliberate attempt to impede our country’s progress.

Our work as a community foundation is to create a thriving region of shared prosperity, belonging, and justice, where all individuals and communities have equitable access and outcomes, regardless of race, place, or identity. In order to achieve this vision, we must confront and address the pervasive systemic racism that stands in the way of peace and justice.

We recognize that Seattle Foundation has the privilege of being at the intersection of cross-sector organizations with great influence and power. With this access comes a responsibility to ensure we live our values. We are committed to joining in and building coalitions to stand up for the principles that ensure we live up to our nation’s promise.
